Ride on lawn mowers are usually used to cut a yard that is half an acre or more. These mowers come in both manual and hydrostatic transmissions, with manual being the most common and having the least problems. The transmissions can range from three to seven speeds. Most of these mowers have a side discharge tunnel, but at least one brand carries a rear discharge. A rear discharge makes it easier to cut close to edges and plants with both sides of the mower.
The cutting deck comes in various cutting widths, the most popular being between 36" and 42" depending on the size of the area being cut, and have a different number of adjustment heights. These mowers can have rotary blades, reel blades, or counter rotary blades, and have different numbers of blades. The counter rotary blades cut the grass up into small pieces which can be used for mulching. Engines to choose from can include Honda and Briggs & Stratton. There is even a cordless, rechargeable model.

When shopping for one of these mowers, you may find it helpful to sit on it and, perhaps, even ride it, in order to assess how comfortable the mower will be for you. There are different styles and placements of seats, the pedals are different on different mowers, the engine noise level differs from model to model, and even things like cup holders are in different places. You may also want to be aware of the location of the gas tank and how easy it will be for you to fill.
